I Hate Picture Books!

And neither does Timothy Young, author-illustrator of the new picture book I HATE PICTURE BOOKS! It’s his main character with the picture book problemo. I will let him explain… In November I was a guest blogger for PiBoIdMo and I told a brief version of how I had the idea for I HATE PICTURE BOOKS!. I was at the NJSCBWI 2011 summer conference where I was on the faculty. I taught a seminar about creating pop-up books and sat on a panel with some of the other authors in the KidLit Authors Club. I attended a couple of the other seminars while there, including “Finding The Funny Stuff” with Audrey Vernick and Olugbemisola Rhuday-Perkovich.  They were talking about parody (I love good parody) in children’s books and Olugbemisola made a very funny comment about Paddington Bear’s immigration status. That’s where things got rolling. I’ve always loved good parody but I hadn’t really thought of doing a parody book. There have been some really good ones lately like Michael Rex’s THE RUNAWAY MUMMY and GOODNIGHT GOON. So sitting there I started thinking, if I were going to do a parody what would it be? Images of classic books started running through my head and I thought, there are too many to choose from. Could I do something that used a bunch of books instead of just one? Somewhere in my thoughts appeared this kid, this boy who misinterpreted what he was reading. He was angry about it and he yelled “I hate picture books!”. I have to say I really liked that title. It had a great hook and I thought “there’s a title readers will notice”. It has to be a good story with a title like that. I thought of all of the books this boy would be angry at. I thought of the kind of trouble he would get into based on what he read. I was really enjoying the process. I had the beginning of the book really fleshed out, I was even designing spreads in my head. Having the boy (he was eventually named Max) appear in the books he was talking about, and illustrating him in the style of classic illustrators really excited me. I then came up with the idea of having lots and lots of books lying on the floor and I couldn’t wait to get home and start drawing some of the scenes I was working out in my head. So this story pushed it’s way out of my head. Once I got home from the conference I began furiously drawing. I designed my boy and started drawing him onto the scenes I was developing. I went to my local library and checked out dozens of books. (I’ve dedicated this book to my mom and to Rosemary Morris, the children’s librarian at the Talbot County Library). I’ve had an ability to mimic other peoples styles which I’ve developed working in the toy industry with licensed product from Disney, Henson and other famous character brands. I knew I had to go the New York in August for 2 weeks so I gave myself a deadline to have a rough dummy ready for then. I made my deadline and set up some meetings. I HATE PICTURE BOOKS! was sent out to a number of publishers by my then agent, and was turned down (nicely) by all of them. In November I was introduced to the good people at Schiffer Publishing. I submitted it along with SHADOWS ON MY WALL, THEY’RE COMING! and another book. They came back to me quickly saying they wanted all four. Since SHADOWS ON MY WALL  and THEY’RE COMING! were almost ready to go they were put into the schedule right away. I then had 6 months to finish all of the illustrations for I HATE PICTURE BOOKS!  and here it is coming out in a couple of weeks! I’m having a book launch event at Books of Wonder in NYC on March 2nd (Dr. Seuss’ Birthday!) from 1 â€" 3 pm. There is only so much you can do, and time is finite. How do you do more? Leverage. And how do you leverage? One way is through People.It’s important to start out with  the decision that you are building a business, and not simply remaining self-employed. After you consider the Brand, and begin to develop and implement your Systems, that’s when you begin the hu nt, looking for People to join your cause.At a recent talk with schoolchildren, I told the young audience of my belief that they were in school mainly to do two things:To learn how to learnTo learn how to work with othersIf you master those two skills, you will be able to go anywhere and do anything. Fail, and you will always struggle. And indeed,  it has been argued that  success is 15% dependent on technical expertise and 85% reliant on people skills. To look at it another way, that means people skills are almost six times more important than technical ability. And that is why People are the crucial third leg of successful business in our three-legged stool analogy.Brand (reputation) is fed or starved by the robustness of the Systems you build and ultimately by the implementation of those systems by People  who produce the products, answer the phones, provide the service, interact with the customer.Find great people.  They add value to your systems. The wrong people will damage th e systems, your brand, and ultimately your business.Every day I give a tour of the Carambola facility to  outsiders. Whether my tour parties are adults or children, I am honestly always blown away by the systems we have built. Carambola produces 24,000 individually labelled and sealed lunch bags â€" each one different to the next, each carrying on a label, the name of the child, the menu items chosen and even the calorie count.Making that happen every day requires  systems (which we have developed over 13  years of trade).Doing it brilliantly requires a dedicated team of great people. Doing it consistently year on year is what has allowed us build a brand with an excellent reputation for quality, consistency and reliability.Good Brand â€" Great Systems â€" Even Better People.Of course, while Carambola has attracted many great people over the years, we have also made a number of hiring mistakes. So will you, and frankly, I wouldnt change that.  Getting out there and operating in a sp ace  where you’re challenged to make more good decisions than mistakes is what it’s all about. For me, despite the difficulties underlying the question of how to build a successful business, the alternative was eternal consignment to working in a small business that would require all of my personal time and effort, forever. How Long Will My Job Search Take Longer Than You Think! [Updated] - Career Pivot How Long Will My Job Search Take? I am often asked, “How long will my job search take?” My answer is almost always, “It depends.” I work, primarily, with those in the 2nd half of lifeâ€"which is code for those over 50 years of age. I tell them that a really short job search is three months. It takes almost three months for a company to decide to hire someone, post the job, interview candidates, make an offer, and then make the hire. What factors affect how long the job search will take? Depth of experience and perceived salary requirements Your network Geographical demand for your skills Time of year Age discrimination Depth of experience and perceived salary requirements The more experience you have and the greater perceived salary requirements, the longer it will take. Notice I wrote perceived salary requirements. Yes, I know you say you will take less money but…no one will believe you! The reality is, the higher the perceived salary requirements, the fewer and fewer jobs there will be. After you get over a 6 figure income, the number of jobs decreases in most job markets. The more money you make the longer the job search will take. Your Network Your next job will likely come through a referral. That referral will come from one of three several types of relationships: An existing relationship A stale relationship that you will re-energize, which is also called a weak tie A new relationship you strategically create If you follow the Target Job Search Strategy you will be strategically building a referral network.The stronger your network the shorter your job search. Geographical demand for your skills Are your skills valued in your local job market? For example, if you have an oil and gas background and you are looking for a position in Central Texas, where I live, well…it will be a tough and long job search. However, if you move to Houston, you will find your skills much more valued. If you have a certification, is it valued in your local market? The varies greatly by region! If your skills or credentials are in overabundance or are not valued in your local region, you need to extend the length of your job search or expand your geographical search zone. Look for people who look, taste, and smell like you to determine whether your skills are in demand. Search LinkedIn for people with your level of experience, certification, and skills to determine the demand in your region. Who employs people who look, taste and smell like you? Time of year Like every other business process, hiring goes through cycles. A lot of hiring occurs after annual budgets are approved. Look at financial statements of each target company on your target list and determine when the fiscal year begins. Some companies start their fiscal year in October and others start in January. Hiring usually stops from late November through the middle of January. This is an excellent time to network and build your tribe, but little hiring occurs during this time. Similarly, hiring slows down (but does not stop) during July and August when many people go on vacation. It only takes one person in the hiring process to go on vacation for everything to grind to a halt. I highly recommend you follow your local business journal. If a company gets a big order, funding from a venture capital firm, investment from private equity or received a local or federal grant, this is the time pursue the target company. These kinds of investments will follow a calendar cycle and you need to track when each kind of investment tends to come in the calendar year. Age discrimination Age discrimination is alive and well. You need to factor this into the length of your job search. You have to be realistic and find employers who value your skills and experience and will not discriminate based on your age. I am working with a client right now who is part of the long-term unemployed cohort, and she is targeting government positions. For her, it is a numbers game, but she will be treated fairly in applying for government positions. For those of you in the 2nd half of life, are your skills and age a barrier? I live in Austin Texas, one of the worst places to be old and unemployed as documented by the Atlantic.Austin has a general unemployment rate hovering just above 3% but the unemployment rate for those over 50 years of age exceeds 12%. Even if your skills are in high demand, being over 50 will increase the length of your job search. So how long will my job search take? I tell my clients to plan for a minimum of 6 months to 2 years. If you are employed, it really depends on the amount of time you can dedicate to the job search. If you follow my Target Job Search Strategy, you should plan on starting your job search 18 months after you start a new job and plan on that search taking 18 months. That means you will be prepared to changed jobs every 3 years. That does not mean you will change jobs every 3 years, BUT you will be prepared to do so. If you follow the strategy that jobs are never permanent and you always are looking for your next position, your job search will be much shorter should you become unemployed.
