6 Ways to Prep for Your Salary Negotiation You can never underestimate the importance of having a plan. By that I mean doing some simple salary calculations so you go into an interview with a range in mind. Negotiating salary during the interview process can be very overwhelming. You don’t want to sound greedy or too high on yourself; but on the flip side of that coin, you don’t want to be too meek to ask for what you’re worth. Many interviewees also don’t like the idea of starting off on the wrong foot with a potential new employer, and the thought of confrontation leads them to accept whatever offer the company gives. Sure, negotiating a salary can be uncomfortable, however, if you take less than you think you’re worth, you’ll be unfulfilled financially won’t stick with your new job for the long-term. I once made this mistake myself, when I took a job in Denver for a really low salary. Instead of negotiating for what I thought I was worth, I stuck it out until I had to seek the advice of a personal injury attorney because I was so miserable. I could have avoided bad blood between myself and my employer by having a salary range in mind and demanding to be paid what my skills were worth. To help you avoid making the same mistake I made, go into any job interview with a salary calculation in mind and follow these 8 steps to negotiate the salary that you deserve: 1. Have a number in mind Going into any interview setting, you must know that the interviewer will ask you what your salary expectations are. So be prepared with a salary range before entering the interview room. Do this by researching the average salary of similar positions in your area. Don’t forget to figure in your education and qualifications as well. Also, keep in mind that if you ask for a higher salary, you will almost always get a bit more money than what the employer originally offered if they think you have the experience and skills to back it up. 2. Let the employer bring up the topic of salary Eventually the interview will lead into discussions on salary. However, my negotiation tactic is to let the interviewer provide a range before you offer up an expected amount. This way, you’re working within the employers presumed budget and not firing so far out of the ballpark that they aren’t interested in you anymore. 3. Always negotiate within a range This way you have a high and low end for the employer to work with. Don’t under value yourself, but providing a range shows that you are willing to compromise and negotiate from there. 4. Support your expected salary with an explanation Explain to the interviewer that you came to the salary calculation based on the skills and value you will bring to the company in this position. For example, talk about your education, skills, expertise, accomplishments in the profession, and your years on the job. 5. Bonuses and holidays are also up for negotiation If the money you’re offered is on the low end, but you see a lot of promise in the company, don’t be afraid to do a little more negotiating as far as holidays and benefits. Many newer companies offer lower salaries, but are willing to top it off with additional holidays or bonuses until they can afford to pay employees more money. Remember, bonuses and holidays can add another 40 percent to a basic salary and you can still negotiate as far as lieu days, reduced hours, and the option to work from home. 6. Remain amicable Negotiating doesn’t give you a right to be defensive and abrupt. Remember, you are still making an impression on a potential new employer so remaining firm with the salary that want, but displaying some flexibility will show the interviewer that you are a team player. How Long Will My Job Search Take Longer Than You Think! [Updated] - Career Pivot How Long Will My Job Search Take? I am often asked, “How long will my job search take?” My answer is almost always, “It depends.” I work, primarily, with those in the 2nd half of lifeâ€"which is code for those over 50 years of age. I tell them that a really short job search is three months. It takes almost three months for a company to decide to hire someone, post the job, interview candidates, make an offer, and then make the hire. What factors affect how long the job search will take? Depth of experience and perceived salary requirements Your network Geographical demand for your skills Time of year Age discrimination Depth of experience and perceived salary requirements The more experience you have and the greater perceived salary requirements, the longer it will take. Notice I wrote perceived salary requirements. Yes, I know you say you will take less money but…no one will believe you! The reality is, the higher the perceived salary requirements, the fewer and fewer jobs there will be. After you get over a 6 figure income, the number of jobs decreases in most job markets. Please read my post Will I Ever Be Employed Again in a Job I Want?This is the story of Matt, a former CEO who went almost 3 years underemployed because of the perceived salary requirements. The more money you make the longer the job search will take. Your Network Your next job will likely come through a referral. That referral will come from one of three several types of relationships: An existing relationship A stale relationship that you will re-energize, which is also called a weak tie A new relationship you strategically create If you follow the Target Job Search Strategy you will be strategically building a referral network.The stronger your network the shorter your job search. Geographical demand for your skills Are your skills valued in your local job market? For example, if you have an oil and gas background and you are looking for a position in Central Texas, where I live, well…it will be a tough and long job search. However, if you move to Houston, you will find your skills much more valued. If you have a certification, is it valued in your local market? The varies greatly by region! If your skills or credentials are in overabundance or are not valued in your local region, you need to extend the length of your job search or expand your geographical search zone. Look for people who look, taste, and smell like you to determine whether your skills are in demand. Search LinkedIn for people with your level of experience, certification, and skills to determine the demand in your region. Who employs people who look, taste and smell like you? Time of year Like every other business process, hiring goes through cycles. A lot of hiring occurs after annual budgets are approved. Look at financial statements of each target company on your target list and determine when the fiscal year begins. Some companies start their fiscal year in October and others start in January. Hiring usually stops from late November through the middle of January. This is an excellent time to network and build your tribe, but little hiring occurs during this time. Similarly, hiring slows down (but does not stop) during July and August when many people go on vacation. It only takes one person in the hiring process to go on vacation for everything to grind to a halt. I highly recommend you follow your local business journal. If a company gets a big order, funding from a venture capital firm, investment from private equity or received a local or federal grant, this is the time pursue the target company. These kinds of investments will follow a calendar cycle and you need to track when each kind of investment tends to come in the calendar year. Age discrimination Age discrimination is alive and well. You need to factor this into the length of your job search. You have to be realistic and find employers who value your skills and experience and will not discriminate based on your age. I am working with a client right now who is part of the long-term unemployed cohort, and she is targeting government positions. For her, it is a numbers game, but she will be treated fairly in applying for government positions. For those of you in the 2nd half of life, are your skills and age a barrier? I live in Austin Texas, one of the worst places to be old and unemployed as documented by the Atlantic.Austin has a general unemployment rate hovering just above 3% but the unemployment rate for those over 50 years of age exceeds 12%. Even if your skills are in high demand, being over 50 will increase the length of your job search. So how long will my job search take? I tell my clients to plan for a minimum of 6 months to 2 years. If you are employed, it really depends on the amount of time you can dedicate to the job search. If you follow my Target Job Search Strategy, you should plan on starting your job search 18 months after you start a new job and plan on that search taking 18 months. That means you will be prepared to changed jobs every 3 years. That does not mean you will change jobs every 3 years, BUT you will be prepared to do so. If you follow the strategy that jobs are never permanent and you always are looking for your next position, your job search will be much shorter should you become unemployed. UCAS Offers How To Respond On Deadline Day UCAS OFFERS 2015 DEADLINEThe 25th June 2015 is an  important day for  UCAS. It marks the deadline for students to accept UCAS offers. For parents and students, this can be an extremely stressful process.In this blog, we’ll show you how to respond to your UCAS offers on deadline day.UCAS offers explainedIf you have been offered a place by either a university or college, this will come in 1 of 2 forms:Conditional UCAS  Offers. If you have been made an offer on a conditional basis, then this means that the university or college making the offer will only accept you if you meet certain conditions. For example, you might need to match certain grades in the subjects that you are taking.  You might also need to meet a certain number of UCAS tariff points. Not every uni uses this system though, and the large majority will simply have certain grade criteria that you need to meet.Unconditional UCAS Offers. If you have been made an unconditional offer, then you have met all of the academic r equirements of the uni. This means that they will be happy to accept you.Types of ReplyWhen you reply to your offers, you will need to do so using UCAS Track. You then have 3 options. These are:Firm Acceptance. Firm acceptance is your first choice. You can only have 1 firm choice  on your list. Make sure you think it through before replying.Insurance Acceptance. If you have only been made a conditional offer by your firm choice, you can accept another offer. This will be an insurance choice, in the event that aren’t accepted by your first choice. You can only have 1 insurance choice.  If you don’t meet the conditions for your firm choice, but do so for your insurance choice, you will then be committed to your insurance choice.Decline. Once you have made your decision as to your choices, you need to decline all of the other offers. You also have the option to decline all offers, which will take you through to either Extra, or Clearing.ExtraIf you aren’t holding any UCAS offers, you can use Extra to apply for any course with vacancies.Extra normally closes in early July, giving you more time to find an available spot.If you are eligible for Extra, you will be given the option to use it in choices section of ‘Track’. You will only be eligible if you have already used all five choices on your form. For example if all of your choices were unsuccessful, or if you have declined all of your offersYou can add extra choices using ‘Track’. Just click on the add extra choice tab. Then, enter the details of your chosen university and course.  You can only make one choice at a time. However, the number of times that you can add an extra choice before July is unlimited.Courses that have a place will be located with a grey x under the course search option. Remember that not every university will have extra places available. Therefore you may need to search thoroughly before you find anything.If you are still waiting for a decision from some of your choices, you can cancel these choices via Track. Then, the ‘add extra’ option will become available. You won’t be able to get these choices back after you have done this, so think carefully.You will be committed to your Extra choice unless you fail to meet the conditions of their UCAS offers. In this case, you will become eligible to go into ClearingClearingClearing allows students to apply for courses that still have available spaces. This applies to students who haven’t received any UCAS offers, have rejected all of their offers or have missed the conditions on all of their offers.If your track status reads, ‘You are in clearing’ or ‘clearing has started’ then you are eligible for clearing.First of all, search for a list of available courses online. Once you have made a shortlist of the courses that you would like to take, you’ll need to call up individual universities.Make sure that you have to hand both your clearing number and your personal ID number. You should also have a copy of both your A Level and GCSE grades, and their UCAS offers points value.When ringing  universities, the first person that you’ll speak to will be a member of the clearing team. They’ll pass you on to one of the course leaders.The next conversation will take the form of a phone interview. Here you will need to sell your qualities. You will need to tell the lecturer exactly why you want to take the course. The more research you can do, the better.Once you have completed the phone-call, the interviewer  will either make you a verbal offer or inform you that you haven’t been successful.Once you have received the offer that you want, add this to your choices on track. Blog Out Loud 6 was Blogtastic!

Blog Out Loud 6 was Blogtastic! The panelists! Meredith, Amy, me, Rebecca (moderator Blog Out Loud co-creator), Megan (co-creator of Blog Out Loud), Alison Erin. I think we might be the best looking panel in the history of ever. Monday night was Blog Out Loud 6 (finally!), to say I was superly duperly psyched would be a superly duperly understatement. I had a private session and a group coaching session scheduled, but I cleared the rest of my day to get ready (a combination of getting into the right frame of mind straightening the hell out of my hair) just enjoy everything leading up to what I knew was gonna be a wonderful night. This was as close to performing as Ive gotten being a coach, I couldnt wait to get in front of an audience have my castmates be a panel of really highly respected, awesometastic bloggers. I knew this was my jam. I was cool as a cucumber until, oh, 5:30p or so, when I got on the subway made my way to tonefarmer 75 minutes before I had to be there. Of course, the usually long-ish wait for the G train took mere seconds, I got out of the subway 40 minutes before Rebecca Megan asked the panelists to arrive. I decided to head over to tonefarmer anyways, figuring that my two hands might be of use for setting up, stuffing goody bags, etc. ( I aint above some manual labor yet!). I ignored the butterflies in my stomach and made my way to 25th Street. Rebeccas the one who asked me to be on the panel! I tricked her super good. My nerves immediately melted away when I walked into the beautiful space, met / hugged / squealed with Rebecca Megan, welcomed my friend Jen with her Fanny Jane goodies (holy drooltime). Although Rebecca Megan didnt need my two hands for anything other than drinking wine, I managed to put out some Fanny Jane treats while only eating one of them. For now. tonefarmer, pre-event. I contained myself to 3 of em. And 1 salted peanut butter buckeye. And 1 Nutty Graham Bar Bites. And 2 Mini Choco Buttercream Sammies. But that was my dinner. Yeah. That sounds good. It was my dinner. Another photo by Blog Out Loud. One by one, I met the rest of the warm, good-looking, amazeballs panel. Everyone was so friendly sweet that I knew I was in good company. Yup. Blog Out Loud 6 was gonna rock my socks. The crowd, and me getting to my seat on the panel a bit late. Thank God Im cute! Photo by Blog Out Loud. Before I knew it, it was time for the panel to take their seats for the panel-ing to start. Megan Rebecca gave everyone a super warm welcome, then it was time for the panel to introduce themselves starting with me! Thankfully I had mentally rehearsed my elevator speech (which is really an elevator sentence or two: My names Michelle Ward Im the When I Grow Up Coach. I help creative people devise the career they think they cant have, or discover it to begin with. In this instance, I added, Blah blah certified life coach blah blah NYU blah blah whenigrowupcoach.com/blog with the blah blah blahs replaced with brilliant, sparkling, genius-ish words) didnt have time to get flustered. And thankfully, my new BlogHer friend Patty (of the Inadvertantly Doing Something Scary post) was in the front, every time Id look her way shes smile at me. That gave me the warm fuzzies. (Thanks, Patty) The hour just flew by as we all gave our takes on the rewards of blogging, time management, monetizing your blog, twitter, authenticity, the line between personal professional when it comes to blogging, using the word amazeballs in public ( often!)I can go on on! Generally, I just loved the diversity of the panel as a mix of bloggers bloggin for themselves/their business those blogging under larger corporate umbrellas (Alison blogs for Etsy Meredith blogs for Ebay). So, so interesting to hear about the difference. Also, the whole vibe of the evening was very down-to-earth, inspiring, intimate laid-back but with a really fun, high-energy, uh, energy. It was absolutely reinforced to me last night that the blogging community is one that is a positive, supportive neighborhood. Were here to share our wins/lessons/challenges, make connections, build relationships find the like-minded people who live on the other side of town and on the other side of the world. It really is all about claiming your uniquity not being afraid to put that out into the universe. I love how all the panelists encouraged the bloggers/budding bloggers to create their own space that reflects their own vision, everyone who doesnt agree be damned! No, I didnt start drinking til after the panel ended! Unless you count the glass of wine beforehand My BlogHer/Twitter friends! Patty, Tara Ashley. Thanks for coming out, ladies! I got nothing but awesometastic feedback from those who I knew that went last night, whether theyre new bloggers or seasoned ones. And the twitter accolades have me smiling all day!
